What this bill does

Plain-language analysis by the nonpartisan Legislative Reference Bureau

Under current law the Department of Health Services (DHS) licenses three

classes of emergency medical technicians (EMTs): basic, intermediate, and

paramedic. DHS may charge a fee for issuing an EMT license, except DHS may not

charge a person a fee for an EMT - basic license if the licensee is an employee of a

public agency and works for an ambulance service provider. This bill provides that

DHS may not charge a fee for issuing an EMT - basic license to any volunteer EMT.
