What this bill does

Under current law, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) establishes

and maintains open and closed seasons for hunting game animals, including deer.

One of the open seasons established by DNR by rule is a nine-day open season for

hunting deer with firearms that begins on the Saturday immediately preceding the

fourth Thursday in November (regular firearm deer season).

This bill requires DNR to establish an additional season for hunting deer with

firearms that begins on February 4, 2010, and that continues through February 7,

2010. Under the bill, the additional season is only open for deer hunting by residents

of this state who were outside of this state serving on active duty in the U.S. armed

forces or national guard during the regular firearm deer season that began on

November 21, 2009. The bill specifies that a person who hunts during this additional

season must, upon DNR's request, provide satisfactory evidence to DNR that he or

she meets the requirements for hunting during this additional season.
