What this bill does

Plain-language analysis by the nonpartisan Legislative Reference Bureau

Current law requires the Department of Transportation (DOT) to operate

examining stations in each county. Also under current law, as created in

2011

Wisconsin Act 32

(the Biennial Budget Act), DOT must provide in each county,

directly or by contract, at least 20 hours per week of services relating to operator's

licenses and identification cards.

Under this bill, each examining station or other location where DOT provides

services relating to operator's licenses and identification cards (DMV service center)

must remain open all day on each weekday in the 30 days immediately preceding an

election and in the three days immediately following an election, until at least 8 p.m.

on the day of the election, and on four successive Saturdays immediately preceding

the election. However, this requirement applies only with respect to DMV service

centers that are located in the same county where the election is being held.
