What this bill does

Plain-language analysis by the nonpartisan Legislative Reference Bureau

Under current law, a county may establish one or more public inland lake

protection and rehabilitation districts (lake districts) in the county. A board of

commissioners is established to manage the affairs of a lake district, which include

enacting boating ordinances and receiving state funding for local water safety

patrols. Under current law, the board consists of five members, one of whom is a

member of the governing body of the city, village, or town within which the largest

portion of the district lies, as measured by property tax valuation, and who is selected

by that body. Under this bill, the governing body may either appoint one of its

members to serve on the board or another person who resides in the city, village, or

town.
