What this bill does

This bill allows local highway authorities to reduce the maximum speed limit
by 20 miles per hour on highways under local jurisdiction with a speed limit of 55
miles per hour. The speed limit may be reduced without the approval of the
Department of Transportation.
Under current law, DOT and local highway authorities may modify the
maximum speed limit applicable to highways under their respective jurisdictions if
DOT or the local highway authorities determine that the current maximum speed
limit is not reasonable or safe or that the current actual speed of traffic is not
reasonable or prudent. Local highway authorities are prohibited from modifying
certain speed limits without the approval of DOT.
