What this bill does

Plain-language analysis by the nonpartisan Legislative Reference Bureau

Under current law, the Department of Natural Resources regulates the

hunting, fishing, and trapping of wild animals and is required to promulgate rules

to carry out that function. Under rules promulgated by DNR, a person hunting for

bear, training a bear dog, or hunting deer in specified counties may not place, use,

or hunt over bait or feed that contains or is contained within metal, paper, plastic,

glass, wood, or other similar processed materials. This prohibition does not apply to

bait or feed placed in hollow logs or stumps or to scent materials.

Under this bill, the exception for bait or feed placed in stumps is expanded to

include stumps to which bottoms made of wood or similar processed materials are

affixed with adhesive, nails, or screws.
