What this bill does
Plain-language analysis by the nonpartisan Legislative Reference Bureau
Under current law, in fiscal year 2021-22, the Department of Administration
is required to award grants to American Indian tribes or bands in Wisconsin. DOA
must establish the amount of each grant based on the pro rata number of employees
employed by each tribe or band as of December 31, 2019. Each tribe or band may use
grant moneys as it deems necessary to support programs to meet the needs of
members of the tribe or band, and no grant moneys may be used to pay
gaming-related expenses.
This bill requires DOA to award additional grants to American Indian tribes
and bands in this state, without respect to the number of employees employed by the
tribe or band, so that each tribe or band in Wisconsin receives at least $1,000,000 in
grant moneys. The grant moneys may be used as described above.
