What this bill does

Plain-language analysis by the nonpartisan Legislative Reference Bureau

Under current law, with various exceptions, an individual must be a resident

of this state for at least 12 months prior to any semester or session for which the

student registers at a University of Wisconsin System institution in order to be

exempt from paying nonresident tuition.

This bill requires the Board of Regents to provide a nonresident tuition

exemption to students who are the children of UW System alumni. The Board of

Regents may establish a surcharge not to exceed 20 percent of the academic fees

(tuition) charged to the students who receive this nonresident tuition exemption.
