This bill eliminates the surcharges for registering electric automobiles and motor trucks and creates a surcharge of $5 for registering automobiles and motor trucks weighing over 4,500 pounds.
Under current law, a motor vehicle may not be operated upon a highway without a current, valid registration. In general, vehicles must be registered on an annual basis by payment of a specified fee to the Department of Transportation. For motor trucks and automobiles that are hybrid electric vehicles or nonhybrid electric vehicles, a surcharge of $75 and $100, respectively, is added to the annual registration fee.
