Under current law, for each pupil attending a private school under the parental choice program or the Special Needs Scholarship Program and for each pupil attending an independent charter school, the Department of Public Instruction pays a per pupil amount to the private school participating in a parental choice program or the Special Needs Scholarship Program or the independent charter school. DPI pays the annual per pupil amount to the private school or independent charter school in four equal installments. Under the bill, if, during the school year, a pupil withdraws from a private school participating in a parental choice program or the Special Needs Scholarship Program or from an independent charter school and enrolls in a school district, DPI must pay any remaining amount due to the private school or independent charter school for that pupil to the school district in which the pupil is enrolled.
