What this bill does

Plain-language analysis by the nonpartisan Legislative Reference Bureau

This bill requires the Department of Public Instruction, in consultation with the Office of School Safety in the Department of Justice, to create a prerecorded audio message to announce a school lockdown. Additionally, DPI must make the audio message available to public, private, and tribal schools at no cost.

Under current law, school boards and governing bodies of private schools must have a school safety plan that includes an individualized safety plan for each school building and facility that is regularly occupied by pupils. The bill requires that each individualized safety plan incorporate the school lockdown audio message created by DPI to announce a school lockdown required in the plan.
