Currently, the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection has the authority to quarantine farmed animals if it suspects an animal is infected with chronic wasting disease (CWD).
This bill prohibits DATCP from ordering the quarantine of an animal that belongs to a species that is known to neither carry nor be susceptible to CWD, including deer belonging to the species Dama dama, based solely on an incident of the animal having been exposed to CWD. Deer in the Dama dama species are commonly referred to as “fallow” deer.
